The Mission Market of First Presbyterian Church is open the first and third Sundays of every month (and during special events) in the fellowship hall.Sponsored by the Global Mission Committee, The Mission Market features fair trade crafts and foods from around the world. Located in the south end of the Fellowship Hall (old PW office), the market is open from 9:30-10:00, 10:30-11:00, and 12-12:30. The market will not be open during Sunday school or Worship.

The Mission Market exists to provide an opportunity for members to purchase items made by low-income artisans and farmers. The income from these sales helps to lift families out of poverty, giving them hope for a better future for themselves and their children. In the fair trade model, the producers are paid a “down payment” when an order is placed so that they can buy supplies and sustain themselves as they work. When they deliver their goods to organizations such as SERRV and Equal Exchange, they receive the balance of their payment. Fair Trade organizations then provide the goods to craft markets and churches to recoup the payments and continue the process.
At The Mission Market you will find old favorites such as Olive Branch Olive Oil, fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate, global crafts and the opportunity to support Heifer Project International and Keep Hope Alive olive trees. New this year will be Out of the Blue granola from a Tennessee group, a new Congo Coffee that benefits Panzi Hospital (a mission partner of the Presbyterian church (USA) in the DRC), as well as many new products from SERRV and Partners for Just Trade and the Presbyterian Women’s cookbook.
Since The Mission Market will be an ongoing endeavor, sales tax will be charged on purchases. The small profit made on these sales will underwrite the market’s expenses and begin a fund to help emerging craft groups of our mission partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Sixth Annual Chili Cook Off, to help support the UT Presbyterian Center, will be held on Wednesday, February 8th beginning at 5:30 p.m.. You think your chili is good? See if you can join the ranks of the “chili elite”: Tim Murray, 2011 champ; Bryce Elliott, 2009 and 2010 champ; Barb Wiest, Celeste Whaley, 2008 co-champs; and Doy Barron, 2007 champ. Over 140 million people all over the world will tune in to The Super Bowl football game, There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people who will worry about staying warm, finding shelter and a hot meal. Please join our youth, as well as young people around the U.S., as they demonstrate God’s love by loving their neighbor through the Souper Bowl of Caring. Drop $1 or more into the soup pot as you leave worship next Sunday. All donations will go directly to our FISH Pantry.
On Sunday, February 5, the Knox Brass Worx will be with us in worship at the 11:00 a.m. service. Following the service, there will be a catered meal in fellowship hall. The quartet will perform in concert in the Sanctuary following lunch. The concert will include a short work for choir, brass, and organ, Te Deum by John Rutter.
It’s cold and snowy, which means it’s the perfect time for hockey! Join us on Saturday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. as we watch the Ice Bears take on the Augusta Riverhawks. We will meet at the church at 6:30 (game starts at 7:30) and walk or take the van over to the arena.
Do you love to read? Do you constantly discuss the book you just read with your friends or spouse, only to find they aren’t really listening? Well, you will have an opportunity to share your ideas with like-minded people. First Presbyterian is starting a book club, facilitated by Paul Rader. First Presbyterian Church’s community is growing every year with babies! You can help welcome them to the church by donating baby clothes, shoes, bedding for a crib, etc. (age newborn to 1 year old) to the New Horizons class. By donating baby clothing we can help families focus on their growing relationships while alleviating some of the pressures of preparing for their newborn. We can also ensure every new addition is celebrated by offering a year’s worth of clothing for a fast growing new member. *Please donate clothing that is in good condition and recently washed.* You can bring these items to the church office or leave in the closet in the women’s bathroom on the second floor.

First Presbyterian Church formed a running and walking club, the Runnin’ and Walkin’ Turnips, for all different levels of runners and walkers. The Runnin’ and Walkin’ Turnips will resume their normal schedule in the spring (due to the weather). You will need to be added to the Runnin’ Turnips e-mail distribution list to receive notification on which Greenway we will be running. If you would like to receive these emails, please contact Alyssa at alyssa@fpcknox.org or call 546-2531.
Children are welcome and encouraged to come! Don’t worry if you can only come once-a-week. There’s no commitment and you don’t need to RSVP!
This club will also help prepare and train runners and walkers for footraces. Participants can run and walk under the Runnin’ Turnips team (complete with t-shirts!) so, we’ll have fun and spread the good news of Jesus Christ in the heart of Knoxville!
