Boy Scouts of America Troop #5
First Presbyterian and St. Johns jointly support Boy Scout Troop 5 with a stated mission to work with underprivileged boys. Historically, these boys have resided in one of Knoxville’s government housing projects. The demolition of Mechanicsville, and a significant portion of Austin Homes, several years ago resulted in the relocation of many Boy Scout families and prospective Boy Scouts to subsidized housing units throughout the city. While one must hope that these changes will prove to be a positive step in breaking the cycle of poverty, the logistics of reaching and working with the target group are increasingly complex.
All of the Boy Scouts have relied on volunteers to provide transportation to and from all scouting meetings and events. The troop is seeking volunteers who will cheerfully assist with transportation. The troop is currently experiencing a change in leadership. After twenty years of faithful service as scoutmaster and troop committee chairman, Larry Russell will be unable to continue volunteering with the troop due to his professional success, which resulted in attracting many out of town contracts requiring extended travel. David Johnson, a retired Army Colonel who attends St. John’s Cathedral and lives in Oak Ridge, has accepted positions as scoutmaster. In addition, his son has agreed to serve as assistant scoutmaster. Boy Scout Troop 5 is very thankful for the support that First Presbyterian Church has provided both in time and talent and hopes that even more church members interested in Boy Scouts and serving the underprivileged will volunteer. A special note of thanks is due for the many years of service that Ben Garlington and Ed Peterson have given to the troop.
