DOGWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

During the school year, tutors from First Presbyterian visit Dogwood Elementary School to listen to the children read, help with math, and assist kindergarteners with number and letter recognition. Volunteers often schedule several children back-to-back if they have the time to help more than one student. Individuals work with the same child or children every time so there are opportunities to build relationships.

FPC has had as many as 15 volunteers serving as tutors/mentors for students, working on a weekly basis for 30-60 minutes at a time. Some also have lunch with the child at school or attend programs in which the child is involved. Members of the congregation donate school supplies and, give money for Safety Patrol scholarships for those children who can’t afford the end of year trip to Washington, D.C. Members of FPC purchase Christmas gifts for needy families that are wrapped during the Giving Party in mid-December.  Pat Chambers trains and leads the volunteers and works with the school faculty and staff to maintain a warm, open relationship.
