DOGWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
During the school year, tutors from First Presbyterian visit Dogwood Elementary School to listen to the children read, help with math, and assist kindergarteners with number and letter recognition. Volunteers often schedule several children back-to-back if they have the time to help more than one student. Individuals work with the same child or children every time so there are opportunities to build relationships.
Fifteen members of FPC are currently serving as tutors/mentors for students, working on a weekly basis for 30-60 minutes at a time. Some also have lunch with the child at school or attend programs in which the child is involved. Once again, members of the congregation donated school supplies and, in addition, gave money for Safety Patrol scholarships for those children who could not afford the end of year trip to Washington, D.C. Members of FPC purchased Christmas gifts for two needy families. Members also purchased a box of children’s books at the Friends of the Library sale and donated them to the Dogwood library. Florence Fowler trains new tutors and, along with Gary and Paulette Anderson, works with the school faculty and staff to maintain a warm, open relationship.
