PRESBYTERIAN CENTER at UTK
The Presbyterian Center is a mission of the Presbytery of East Tennessee and the Presbyterian Church (USA). First Presbyterian supports this mission as symbolic extension of the baptismal vows we make to every child baptized in our church. We want to help the Presbyterian Center feel like a home/church away from home/church for students. Members of several Presbyterian Women Circles and the Discipleship Sunday School class provided occasional Sunday evening meals after worship at the Presbyterian Center and baked goods for the students during finals weeks.
In 2007 over 20 students went to Guatemala on a mission trip. They led the Ash Wednesday service and helped provide a Chili Cook Off at our church to raise money for the trip. In 2008 the students went to Chicago on a mission trip in the inner city. Again we had a Chili Cook Off to raise money, gave the March 5th offering, and the students gave a presentation about the Guatemala and Chicago trips. Some of the students have begun volunteering in our Fish Pantry. Since Presbytery decreased funding for the Center this year, the Local Missions Committee donated $5,000 of our share of the remaining Trinity Campaign funds to provide some temporary assistance. We look forward to working side-by-side with the students in the future and the now annual Chili Cook Off next March.
