Baker Tombstone

Note: Abner Baker was a Confederate soldier whose father, Dr. Harvey Baker, was killed in the family home during the Civil War by a Union soldier. Abner Baker may have been seeking to avenge his father’s death shortly after the war when he fought with and killed a Union veteran at the courthouse in Knoxville. Later that day he was taken from the authorities by a mob and hanged from a tree near the courthouse. His burial was permitted in the graveyard because his uncle, Dr. William Baker, was a church elder. The words on the obelisk (one of the tallest monuments in the graveyard) reflect the divided loyalties in Knoxville during the war and the strong feelings about his unlawful death.
