First Presbyterian Deacons

The Deacons at First Presbyterian are often the hands and feet of Christ who seek to serve, bring in new members, visit the sick, and connect the community.

The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-15) is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.

At First Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, the Board of Deacons consists of thirty deacons who serve three year terms, and a youth deacon who serves a one year term.

The office of Deacon, like that of Elder, is ordained and perpetual. The Board of Deacons meet monthly, and may call special meetings when deemed needed by the Moderator.

The Board of Deacons is organized into three primary committees: Hospitality and Safety, New Member Recruitment and Assimilation, Fellowship Committee and Congregational Care.
