New Director of Family Faith Formation Position Open at First Presbyterian

Purpose

The Director of Family Faith Formation will engage, equip, and empower the church family of First Presbyterian Church to lead Christ-centered lives, to be active participants in the body of Christ, and to further the church’s mission of serving for Christ in the heart of Knoxville and around the world, while remaining true to the Reformed tradition. It is the belief of the body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church that lasting faith begins in the heart, moves to the head, and is nurtured and developed through regular individual, family, and corporate faith practices. First Presbyterian Church is a part of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Working in collaboration with First Presbyterian Church’s pastoral staff, Christian Education committee, church staff, and ministry volunteers, the Family Faith Formation Director will be responsible for all initiatives, programs, and activities that model, demonstrate, and teach faith practices to children, youth, parents, and the church family as a whole.

Reporting and Relationships

The Director of Family Faith Formation is a full time job and reports directly to the Associate Pastor. Family Faith Formation initiatives, programs, and activities will be designed and implemented in collaboration with the Pastoral Staff and the Christian Education Committee. Any staff or interns serving in a Family Faith Formation capacity will report directly to the Director of Family Faith Formation.

Responsibilities

The Director of Family Faith Formation will primarily oversee and implement Family Faith Formation initiatives, programs, and activities for children, youth, and families utilizing an intergenerational model. Children and youth are defined as nursery to high school age participants. The Director of Family Faith Formation will also directly supervise any Family Faith Formation staff serving children, youth, and adults.

  • Cultivates Christ-centered relationships that lead to the growth and sustainability of the Family Faith Formation ministry. Ministry growth and sustainability will include increased participation of children, youth, and parents, as well as recruitment, development, and retention of Faith Formation volunteer leaders.

  • Develops Family Faith Formation curriculums that are engaging and transformational for the entire body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church.

  • Equips and empowers parents to teach, model, and demonstrate faith practices within their homes through educational resources, training, and support.

  • Works collaboratively with church staff and committees to develop creative ways to engage children, youth, and their families in church-wide ministries and worship opportunities. This includes coordination of missions projects, liturgical family ministry events (i.e. Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, etc.), special family ministry events (i.e. Third Grade Bibles, Confirmation, Youth Sunday, etc.), and composition and distribution of related devotional materials.

  • Creates intergenerational faith formation opportunities (worship, scripture study, mission work, fellowship gatherings, etc.) that draws each member of the body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church (Knoxville) into a deeper relationship with God and each other.

  • Maintains a strong commitment to personal and professional growth within the field of Family Faith Formation by regular participation in approved continuing education/professional development opportunities (i.e. Association of Partners in Christian Education).

Characteristics

  • Is able to recognize and develop the spiritual gifts of church members; and encourage them to participate in Family Faith Formation ministry volunteer roles where they will best express their spiritual gifts

  • Is skilled at faith curriculum development for children, youth, and families

  • Possess a sound knowledge and understanding of Reformed theology

  • Is a creative, energetic, passionate, and motivated leader

  • Has highly developed interpersonal and communication skills

  • Has the ability to work well with a wide variety of personalities

  • Is resilient, welcoming to new ideas, is not afraid of setbacks, and possess a growth

    mindset.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and theological education preferred

  • Previous experience serving children, youth, and families preferred, particularly within a ministry setting

  • Previous experience developing age-appropriate curriculums for children and youth preferred

  • Previous experience with volunteer coordination preferred

  • Previously served with and/or been an active member of a Reformed faith community preferred
