From the John Knox Center: Retirees needed to assist with River Ridge Environmental Education Program

John Knox Center is looking for retirees or those available weekdays to volunteer or be paid to assist with our River Ridge Environmental Education Program a few days in May. We train you to teach small groups of students (mostly 5th grade) 60-90 minute classes. Classes range from forest ecology to teambuilding. If you are comfortable with lazy sleepy senior reptiles a plus! Call the Camp John Knox office at 865.376.2236 for more info. Background check required.

Wilderness First Aid Training at Camp John Knox

This is a great course for anyone who spends time in the great outdoors!

Discounted Wilderness First Aid course for Tennessee on April 25 from 6-8:30 pm EST. You can attend at Camp John Knox or watch the recording if you can’t make it.

Class covers general outdoor medicine, as well as issues specific to Tennessee.

  • Basic Life Support, stabilizing injuries, and making evacuation decisions

  • Improvising care with your own equipment in an emergency

  • Splinting bone breaks, dressing wounds, spinal damage care, & anaphylaxis

  • Environmental medicine- hypo/hyperthermia, altitude, frostbite

  • Weather- Flash floods, fires, lightning, & storms

  • Wildlife and insects in Tennessee

  • Finding water, treating it, & infectious diseases

  • Getting Lost and signaling for rescue in the mountains

  • Medicolegal topics, liability, and protection

The $35 fee covers the course, certification test, textbook, and all other materials. No prior training is needed, and kids are welcome too.
